On July 14th at 2:43 AM PDT the Sun and Moon share the moment at 21 degrees Cancer 59 minutes, creating the New Moon. The Sun has been transiting through Cancer since the Summer Solstice, and now the Moon joins her side by side.
Cancer is the first Water sign of the zodiac; it is a Cardinal sign bringing in the Summer season. Cancer is the sign of Mother, the home, our ancestors, our Mitochondrial DNA passed down through our Mother’s lineage. It represents what we are most sensitive to with regards to our domestic life, our familial relationships, and our feelings regarding security. The Mother wants to provide wisdom for her children, help them when needed; but to teach them to be self sufficient. It is ruled by the Moon, and like the luminary, the energy changes every day. This is an unpredictable energy unless you follow the cycles of the Moon with the understanding of the signs she experiences on her way to becoming Full.
The motto for Cancer could be the way to the future is through the past. This sign is very connected to ancestry and the history of the family. Where did they come from? What kind of influence did they have? Who were my relatives? This journey into antiquity broadens the scope of who we are, bringing understanding to questions unanswered.
The New Moon is a time of setting goals, making plans, and wishing for all things regarding the sign the Moon is in. This is the perfect time to consider upgrading your self care. This is a nurturing sign, so designing lifestyles that not only support your interests and talents but make time for healthy upgrades for your body. Getting enough exercise whether it’s gardening, taking walks and smelling the flowers, or your favorite sport like swimming will help to center you on what needs attention.
The Sun and Moon are conjunct Mercury Retrograde in Cancer. Mercury is the planet that rules how we think and what we think about. When in this sign we are highly interested in inner, subjective, and personal issues, and our thinking is based more on feelings, intuition, personal experiences, and prejudices rather than reason or logic. Going retrograde slows down the progress, giving us time to reassess our plans of how we are going to approach them. Time to process our feelings and take a break from our past conditioning and defense mechanisms. While Mercury is retrograde, it is square Saturn in Aries. Mercury in Cancer focuses on feelings, intuitive communication, and protecting your core emotional needs while Saturn in Aries concentrates on structure, discipline, and establishing firm boundaries. Saturn acts as a restrictive roadblock that can make emotional expression feel frustrating or dismissed.
The planet Venus, ruling our values, activates this New Moon with a “Yod.” Venus in Virgo has challenging aspects from a square to Mars and Uranus in Gemini, and inconjuncts to Neptune in Aries and Pluto in Aquarius. First the squares; Venus square Mars sets us up for tension in our love life, often because we put our desires ahead of our partner's, and are impatient about having our love needs satisfied. Venus in Virgo seeks practical, detailed, and grounded connection, while Mars in Gemini drives us toward chaotic, scattered, and purely mental stimulation. To get the most out of this aspect, channel this nervous energy into tangible, productive outlets rather than taking it out on the people around you. It is the perfect time to identify outdated habits or recurring relationship conflicts and gently talk them through rather than trying to "fix" or debate them away.
Venus in Virgo governs our values, self-care routines, and how we show affection. Under this influence, we seek perfection, practical acts of service, and stability in relationships and finances. With the square to Uranus in Gemini, the planet of rebellion, sudden awakenings, and mental shifts can occur. We crave intellectual freedom, varied communication, and excitement. Instead of making rash decisions, harness the logical power of Virgo to understand exactly what is making you feel restless. Allow for some spontaneity and intellectual stimulation without completely dismantling the reliable foundations you've built.
The Yod aspect is called the “Finger of God” in astrology, consisting of two planets forming a sextile, with both pointing to a third, focal planet. The focal planet requires integration and acts as a pressure valve for the other two. Venus is the focal planet in this aspect. Neptune and Pluto are slow-moving planets that share a sextile, blending Neptune's imaginative drive with Pluto's transformative power. This duo seeks to manifest collective or spiritual ideals in radical, pioneering, and unconventional ways. Venus in Virgo is practical, analytical, and detail-oriented. This aspect requires us to ground all this high-level, visionary, and transformative energy into practical reality, service, and a tangible form of love or art. Slow down, examine the details, and make sure these grand ideas are actually workable, healthy, and of service to yourself and others.
We can master our emotions and subjective selves with the help of these planets and luminaries, so dig deep and let go.
