On January 13th at 2:27 PM PST we have our first Full Moon of the year in the sign of Cancer. With the Sun in the sign of Capricorn, this sign is opposite this luminary. These are both Cardinal signs; Capricorn begins Winter, and Cancer begins Summer.

But Cancer is a Cardinal Water sign, different and opposite of Capricorn in many ways, but they both share the concern for stability. Cancer is all about feelings, home and family, Mother that gives birth and sustenance to the creation, whether it be human, animal, plant, or otherwise. Cancer is the first water sign of the Solar year; an energy governed by instincts, or body knowledge. Cancer senses what is necessary; reading between the lines and hearing the message from within it. Cancer is a feminine/passive energy; receptive, yet with the cardinal energy, it leads. Like the Mother in a family, she is a different leader than the Father, yet she leads.

This Full Moon reminds us of our relationship with our past, our memories, as well as home and family matters. The Cancer Full Moon invites us to reflect on what brings us a source of reliability, and how we are drawn to create feelings of a secure life. The Full Moon in Cancer is going to be conjunct retrograde Mars, sextile Uranus, trine Neptune,  and in opposition to Pluto in the early degrees of Aquarius. Around this time, we will be required to confront unresolved emotions from our past, gain awareness of the root of our triggers, recognize the impact of unmet needs from our childhood, and let go of patterns and habits that don’t support our well-being.

When the Full Moon is conjunct Mars at 27 degrees Cancer, you may feel that you must always be DOING something, and become impatient and irritable if you have to slow down or wait for anything. A stormy home life may be the result of your own tendency to fight for what you want, rather than compromise. Meditate on the best use of your energy now.

Uranus at 23 degrees Taurus sextiles the Full Moon. You’ll feel uninhibited and spontaneous and can do something unexpected or humorous in order to loosen people up and get them out of their ruts. You’ll crave emotional stimulation, excitement, surprises, and anything new. You love to feel free with this influence, and can create safe boundaries for yourself.

The Full Moon is trine Neptune at 27 degrees Pisces. The beauty and harmony of your surroundings have a very powerful effect on your emotions now. You’ll feel very sensitive and cannot stand to be in an atmosphere where there is discord or dissonance. You will feel more gentle, kind hearted, and peace-loving; you will give or sacrifice much in order to avoid a fight and to "make everyone happy". This will help with the reactive nature of the Moon conjunct Mars.

And Pluto is opposite the Full Moon at 1 degree Aquarius. Your feelings can become so urgent and compelling that you do things that are not rational. You may undergo periodic emotional upheavals and purging, when you must break all ties, release the past and begin anew.

On January 11, 2025, 3:01 PM PST the North and South nodes will enter the Virgo/Pisces axis, after traveling through Libra and Aries since July 2023. They are going to spend the upcoming year and a half in these signs. The South Node in Virgo is here to help us release the excessive need for control, perfectionism, and rigid planning, while still appreciating the value of order, organization, and practical effort. The North Node in Pisces highlights the importance of learning to flow, trusting in Divine timing, and surrendering to Life’s unfolding. The Nodes’ journey through Virgo and Pisces ultimately reminds us that the spiritual and the mundane aren’t separate: they are deeply intertwined. This transit gives us a chance to unite our spiritual practice into our daily lives, seeing all that we do we can do with spiritual intent.

On December 30th at 2:27 PM PST we have a New Moon in Capricorn. The Sun and Moon align at 9 degrees 44 minutes; and this year there are no aspects to them!

This is the last lunation cycle for 2024, and well worth celebrating! Capricorn is a Cardinal Earth sign; cardinal as it begins the Winter season, and is the last Earth sign of the solar year. When the Sun and Moon share this sign, it is time to look at your career, your reputation, and what direction your life is headed in your profession. The bonus this sign brings us all is our attention to our performance in whatever we do. We have choices to make here; just who do you really want to be?

This Earth Sign is all about climbing the mountain of success. The glyph for Capricorn is the SeaGoat; able to navigate both the material and emotional realms. This sign is concerned with security and is very ambitious. Making sure they have enough money, resources, and energy to continue on their path is paramount. Saturn rules Capricorn, making this sign the Elder of the Zodiac. Wise beyond their years, Capricorns are trustworthy and have an untamed spirit. We all benefit from taking a second look at how we are participating in our world when this New Moon arrives. It is time to set up a plan for our future, to take a serious look at where we are and where we wish to be.

The planets that are in relationship with others at this time are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Uranus. Let’s begin with Mercury at 18 degrees Sagittarius. There is a T-Square between Mercury, Jupiter at 13 degrees Gemini, and Saturn at 14 degrees Pisces. In this aspect, the planet to look to for direction is Saturn in Pisces. Overcoming feelings of fear, guilt, anxiety, loneliness, or oversensitivity is an important task for you now. The opportunity for success is thwarted when these feelings get in the way. It is time to deal with the source of your disposition and clean house;)   You may feel an inner conflict between idealism, hope, and faith in the future versus doubt and oppression by limitations and practical realities. You need to develop discipline and patience in order to achieve your aspirations. You will grow by learning to accept frustration and to persevere in spite of obstacles.

Venus at 26 degrees Aquarius is square Uranus at 23 degrees Taurus. Venus speaks to our self-worth and values: what we value and deem worthy in ourselves and others. Uranus is the planet of revolution. It brings change — often in an unexpected and jarring way. It bucks tradition. It throws off the status quo. The theme here is freedom, and the friction between these two planets can help us to consider whether or not we are in the right place doing the right thing.

Next let’s look at Mars at 2 degrees Leo Retrograde. When Mars is retrograde, which it will be from Dec. 6, 2024 to Feb. 23, 2025, it is requiring us to recalibrate our energy, reflect on our sex life, drive, and anger, and take stock of our passions and ambitions. If it feels like this is a big deal kind of astrological transit, that's because it is. The planet of action, energy, sex, and aggression hasn't been retrograde since early 2023. Now this planet is trine Neptune and opposite Pluto! The trine from Neptune is here to help at 27 degrees Pisces. You can dream up creative solutions to problems and take an imaginative, unusual approach to getting a job done. When difficulties arise you will prefer to avoid conflict and confrontation in favor of more peaceful or subtle methods of resolving problems. Working to help others or for a cause that transcends your own narrow, personal interests will be satisfying for you. But the opposition between Mars and Pluto at 1 degree Aquarius will instill a powerful will, and when you want something, you will pursue it passionately and relentlessly until you achieve it. You may be so driven by your desire that you lose all objectivity. Watch out for becoming compulsive, or even obsessed, with doing or achieving something, no matter what the costs or how hard you must work for it. You will have enormous energy reserves, and be capable of extraordinary effort and great achievement if you use your energies for constructive purposes.

And finally, Jupiter in Gemini Retrograde is square Saturn at 14 degrees Pisces. When Jupiter is retrograde, which it has been since October 9th, 2024 and will continue through February 4th, 2025; it’s time to slow down, and not rush into new ventures. To reassess past decisions, question beliefs, and challenge paths taken. Use your inner wisdom to make necessary adjustments to your life path. The square from Saturn demands discipline and patience in order to do the right thing.

So, set your goals up with these insights. Choose the right path for your future and dedicate yourself to researching the best way to move forward. For you are the driver on your path to the goals you set.

On December 21st at 1:20 AM PST the Sun reaches 0 degrees Capricorn, 0 minutes. This is the moment of the Winter Solstice, and the beginning of the season.

Why mention the Yule Log on this occasion? Are you familiar with the tradition of the Yule log? Or perhaps you like to “troll the ancient yuletide carols”? Yule is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world—celebrated on the solstice. “Yule” comes from Old English geol, which shares a history with the Old Norse word jól. Both of these words refer to a midwinter festival centered around the Winter Solstice, which in past times traditionally marked the halfway point of the winter season. After the Solstice, which is the shortest day of the year, the days again begin to grow longer, so it’s thought that Yule was a celebration of the emblem of the returning Sun and the fertile land’s rebirth.

People would choose a special log; one that would represent the warmth of the Sun returning. The tradition is to choose a log native to the area, and cut it to fit inside their fireplace, or to use outside in a bonfire. The Yule log was originally an entire tree! Families would bring the trunk of the Yule tree inside and stick the big end of it into the fireplace. The log would feed the fire through the Twelve Days of Christmas (from Christmas Day through the evening of the 5th of January—known as Twelfth Night). This is a beautiful way to celebrate the Solstice, and you may wish to partake in a nice warm fire during your celebration while enjoying a feast, with friends and loved ones.

Beyond tradition, we now look at this moment through an astrologer's eyes. The Capricorn Sun is a Cardinal Earth Sign. Capricorn is the sign that rules the 10th solar month of the year, and the 10th house of the zodiac. This sign is responsible, ambitious, and eager to build a foundation from which to create. The 10th house, also begins with the midheaven, and speaks volumes of what your career choice will be. Capricorn is the fourth cardinal sign of the solar year, and the first month of winter. It begins on the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. Capricorn energy is beneath the surface like a frozen pond with fish swimming under the ice. They lead through determination and perseverance. They trudge ahead slow but sure, never giving up. The planet Saturn rules Capricorn, and brings caution and restriction to the mix. Saturn governs duty, limitation, self discipline; all things responsible and practical. It teaches us through frustrated effort to take the necessary steps to achieve our goals.

This year, the Sun is inconjunct Mars at 4 degrees Leo, and opposite Uranus at 23 degrees Taurus. The inconjunct aspect represents a mismatch or disconnection between 2 planets or luminaries which needs an adjustment. Capricorn and Leo are very different, one is a grounded builder, and the other a fiery creator. The adjustment for the Sun is to access this fiery energy to bear fruit, to create with heart and power.

The  Sun opposite Uranus transit gives us an urge to try new and exciting ways to live life to the fullest. We can seek the freedom to do things our way and will most likely resist being told what to do. A struggle for independence can relate to an effort to explore and express your individuality and personality. Uranus is the planet of freedom, so take the initiative to let go of limiting situations in your life and shoot for the stars!

Enjoy this new beginning, and dream into your reality, your creation. We are now in the Dreamtime of Winter, so allow yourself to step out of your safety net and try something new with the help of these energies. When you light your Yule Log, say a prayer to be guided to the right actions, and imagine your message is taken by the smoke of the burning log to ALL THAT IS.

Happy Holidays!
