The Autumn Equinox 9/22/2020 at 6:30 AM PDT

On September 22 we will celebrate the turning point from Summer into Fall. We can already feel it in the air, as meteorological fall began September 1st. The Equinox marks the time where the Sun leaves the sign of Virgo and moves into Libra.

What’s so special about the Equinox? Why has it been celebrated by cultures for centuries? There are stone circles and ancient sites that have been created to feature the Sun in the positions of the Equinoxes and Solstices for reasons that have been speculated on for eons. Some say it’s so people could count the cycles of life; know when to plant, when to harvest, when to prepare for either. Others believe there is magic to these turning points from one season to another, and in order to receive the magic for ourselves, ritual is in order. The magic to celebrate at this time is the enchantment of gratitude. We celebrate the abundance, the harvest, and everything we have been blessed with thus far.

I know some of you may think after these difficult times, what do we have to be grateful for? After our lives have been turned upside down, inside out. But Spirit and life has gotten our attention, slowed down our usual existence and forced us to look at ourselves in our lives. Instead of the trance existence we were living day in day out, our wings were clipped and we had to sit still and think. Now is the time to look back and see how we behaved during these times, what we have learned, how we can change. The Equinox is all about change, and moving in new directions.

Time to reinvent ourselves. Take inventory of all of your skills, your interests, your passions and see where they may fit into the world of tomorrow. Staying stuck and resentful isn’t an option. With the Air Sign of Libra coming on the 22nd, we leave behind the Earth sign of Virgo with a new inspiration. Libra energy is mental, inventive and balanced. The glyph for Libra is the scales in balance, and that is the goal here. We’ve been exposed to both the light and the dark, and it is time to strike a balance within ourselves.

I like to go big when celebrating this Equinox. I love to gather elements that represent this occasion, like a feast of garden delights, crystals, decks of cards, Runes, stones and head for my favorite sacred place. For me it is the beach, but it can be anywhere you feel magical and uplifted.

Then I gather rocks and create a medicine wheel which to me represents the 4 directions and the 4 seasons. As I set up my magical ritual I’m considering, listening to guidance, looking and listening. Once it is completed, I set my intention and enter the wheel. At this point I am in communion with All That Is and spend these moments being grateful for my life and all that is in it.

After moving through the wheel I thank all those invisible beings who have joined me in this journey to myself, and send them love from my heart to theirs. Once the ritual is over it’s time to light the bonfire and share the cornucopia with those people who have joined me. Now is the time to share stories, to pass the talking stick and open up to the oneness of the balance between the light and the dark. So on this Equinox, GO BIG;)
